Blogging 101: 5 Things Bloggers Should Do Every Day

Have you heard of Modernette? This chick, Ashley, has some serious blogging skills - and actually shares them with the rest of the blogging communities. She even wrote a book about it! Her tips and tricks have been invaluable to me! If you haven't checked her you - you should do so! Enough with my chit chat! Take it away Ashley!

Hi, guys! I'm Ashley from Modernette, and I am super happy to be blogging here on The Grits Blog today.

Blogging is no joke, as I'm sure a lot of you know. It's like running your own small business, and there is no way to guarantee that the time you're putting into it will actually end in anything other than creative burnout. Over the last two years that I've been blogging, however, I have discovered five things that you can do every day that will really boost your efficiency and success.

1. Take a moment to respond to those who have endorsed you on social media.

I know that this kind of seems like an obvious one, but making a conscious effort to check in on your social media notifications each day really makes a difference. I don't even mean just checking Twitter notifications - I mean taking a peek at those who have followed you on Facebook and liked your photos on Instagram, too!

2. Clear out your Inbox.

This is one of the things that I struggle the most with. I guarantee that I will read your email the second that I see it pop up in my notifications, but there is a good chance that I won't actually respond to you for two or three days. It is the worst habit ever, guys! Just taking a minute a day to respond to those emails lingering around your Inbox does a lot to make that mountain of responses seem just a little bit smaller.

3. Keep on top of tomorrow's schedule.

One of the last things that I do before turning my computer off at night is checking my calendar for the next day. Mostly I do it to make sure that I haven't forgotten to do anything, but I also like to take a glance just to see what's coming up next. Also, if you use Hoot Suite or an alternate, the night before is a great time to make sure you have all of the next day's auto-tweets set up.

4. Tweet at or comment on at least one blogger's tweet or post.

I try to read at least a few blogs every day, even if my Bloglovin' feed doesn't get looked at until the weekend. And while I may not be the most reliable commenter ever, I at least try to leave one meaningful comment a day on a post that I loved. It's easy to forget to comment sometimes, but making it one of my "to-do" items seems to make the habit stick.

5. Respond to your comments always.

Always, always, always take a minute to respond to those who have taken time to comment on your post. Sometimes it can be daunting when you see an entire page full of comments, but unless you're Young House Love - who get thousands of comments per post - it's totally doable. Add twenty minutes into your blog schedule per day, and put your "thank you" hat on!

Once you have your own daily blogger schedule down, you'll totally get into the swing of things and be able to knock each item above out of the park. You may also add or subtract your own favorite things to do.

What is your "must do" everyday for your blog?
Leave yours in the comments

  1. Responding to comments I feel is a must do! & tweeting is just so nice to give them additional exposure like that. These tips are amazing & the clearing out the inbox is something that I need to do more of :)

  2. Ashley is awesome! These are some great tips. Although I have a really hard time keeping on top of my inbox...

  3. I completely agree with responding to comments! I would understand if you get dozens of comments everyday, then anyone could understand that you wouldn't have enough time for that. Otherwise, it just seems rude, especially if they left a particularly thoughtful comment, or asked a question. It definitely doesn't make you want to comment any more! Thanks for these tips (:

  4. I try to do the exact same things... especially big on replying back... & commenting & visiting people that are always faithful on visiting me.

  5. I must read through my favs, for inspiration and to reaffirm what I am doing. I always comment but am never sure is it best to comment on the post or via email...

I love this! I think replies are really important. As I have said before if I get no reply or it takes days and days on a regular basis I feel like my comment really doesn't even matter or I'm not sure if the blogger even read it! That's bad blogging!

  7. This is super great! I think it is really important to acknowledge people that give you social media mentions and shout outs! I loved this post, thanks for sharing!

Great tips! Definitely think interacting on social media is so helpful! Hope you have a happy SITS day! :)

  12. I try to empty my inbox at least by the end of the week. You'd have to be a Super Woman to do it every day. I definitely have lots of admiration for that! x

  13. I try to do these daily, but it amazes me how long it takes to do these and how little time I have left over to write!! I wish we could slow down time sometimes, but I guess I just have to get better at balancing it! Wake up earlier, I guess. Thanks for the post and have a great day!!

  14. Thanks for sharing this site. I'm brand new to blogging and need all the help I can get. Happy SITS day - love your blog!

Great tips! I respond to all of my blog comments and try to comment in ten blogs a day. I love networking!

  16. I enjoyed reading this posts, thanks for sharing some of your blogging habits. There are a few I am going to put into practice. Some of them I already do. Happy SITs day! I enjoy reading your blog. :)

  17. These are great tips! A lot I use already and have really helped to grow my blog! One thing I like to do is promote other bloggers, without being asked--just to show them how great they are!! It's a nice surprise when someone mentions how great you are on social media--and you weren't expecting it:)
